#ourkakaakowifi and TheFUZZ Hawaii

TheFUZZ was commissioned to do a yarnbomb for the launch of Our Kaka'ako WiFi (providing free high speed WiFi in Kaka'ako), and we cranked up the knitting machines to get it done on a tight timeline.

We commissioned Patrice Walker to use her phenomenal crochet skills to make a functional QR code panel (scan the code with a smartphone or tablet app, and it takes you to the Our Kaka'ako website). She's detailed the process on her blog, Yarn Over, Pull Through, and I'm looking forward to trying out the Fair Isle crochet method she used. Patrice has done a lot of Crochet By Numbers work, but this project was a little different for her and I appreciate her taking the time to show us how she planned and then executed the project!

ArchiPURLago has been having fun playing with reflective yarn - this photo shows the embroidery in indirect light. The first photo in this post shows the embroidery with flash photography, lighting up!

This was a fun project to take on, and we'll be taking advantage of the super high-speed wi-fi to post more photos from the scene! We've just started a Tumblr to make it easier to post photos on the fly, by the way (thefuzzhawaii.tumblr.com), and have been hashtagging Instagram and Twitter posts with #thefuzzhawaii to make it easier to find out what we've been up to.

WWKIP 2013 - June 8 in Honolulu

TheFUZZ will be observing World Wide Knit in Public Day (WWKIP) 2013 at Spalding House, repurposing parts of the Fibonacci striped tree sweater to decorate the new family room. If you'd like to help out, we're looking for people to seam pieces together (we'll provide tapestry needles and yarn). If you'd like to hang out, please bring a knit or crochet project to work on! Sunblock, insect repellent, sunglasses, and brimmed hats are recommended. There's a water fountain available, and the cafe sells drinks and food. Kids are welcome!

When: Saturday, June 8, 2013, from 12 noon - 4 pm

Parking is free, but the lot is small. TheBus route 15 (Pacific Heights/Papakolea) stops in front of the museum; please check route information on TheBus.org or 848-5555.

Entrance to the Spalding House Cafe is free to the public during open hours (please note that the cafe will only be open until 2 pm). If you would like to explore the grounds (where we'll be working) and the exhibits, please pay the admission fee at the front desk. The Honolulu Museum of Art is participating in Blue Star Museums: from May 28 - Sept 1, the museum is free to active military personnel and their families with valid ID. Please check with the museum or Blue Star Museums for a list of acceptable IDs.

Weather forecast: looking yarnstormy at Red Pineapple

TheFuzz will be at Red Pineapple in Ward Centre this Saturday, April 20th, from 12 noon - 4 pm, getting knitty in a window! Come on over for cupcakes and cookies and see what we've been working on - the results will be in a silent auction to benefit the Joyful Heart Foundation.

Pow Wow Hawai'i 2013 is underway and ArchiPURLago has been stitching away with the help of TheFUZZ! We'll do the big reveal later this week - for now, here are a couple of clues.

Granny² has been hooking away at a couple of yarnbombs for the #SheepishHeartBomb and at least one of them will pop up in the vicinity of Pow Wow Hawai'i!

Looking to contribute to a yarnbombing?

If you are interested in contributing to a yarnbombing:

Yarn Bombing Los Angeles will be covering the facade of the Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles with granny squares in the spring of 2013, and you can help by sending them crocheted granny squares. Please read through their call for entry carefully to be sure you are sending them what they need!

A secret yarnbombing project in Honolulu is currently in the works. 4" x 4" (10 cm x 10 cm) squares of knit or crochet in any color/fiber are requested, with a deadline of December 15, 2012. YarnStory in Honolulu is available as a dropoff point for finished squares, and there is also a big bag of assorted yarns that are available for use in yarnbombing (for this project or any other project, just go to YarnStory and tell Kim you'd like to pick up some of the yarn for yarnbombing - it's free!).

If you have yarn to donate, YarnStory will accept donations of clean, useable yarn for yarnbombing. TheFUZZ is specifically seeking natural fiber yarns (e.g. 100% wool) in any color/weight/amount, but feel free to bring in whatever you have.

Installation of TheFuzz yarnbombing at Spalding House

The yarnbombing installation at Honolulu Museum of Art Spalding House is coming to a close. August 26, 2012, will be your last chance to view the yarnbombing on the grounds (although the monkeypod branch sleeve will remain up for a little while longer, until arrangements can be made to remove it safely).

The Honolulu Museum of Art Spalding House is currently open Tuesday - Saturday from 10 am - 4 pm and Sunday 12 pm - 4 pm, with a Garden Gallery tour, led by a docent, at 1:30 pm Tuesday - Sunday.

Last week, Granny² smuggled two bags of yarnbombing supplies into the Stoli Summer Series III pool party at The Modern hotel. With the help of Afropocalypse Now, NaPURLeon Complex, and two other yarnbombers who shall remain anonymous, the DJ booth at the party was pom pom yarnbombed in celebration of FLUX Hawaii's launch of the Fall 2012 "Nostalgia" issue. This issue hits the stands Monday, August 13th - check out pages 24 - 25 to see what Jared Yamanuha and John Hook saw.

55' of Mathematical Awesomeness!

We're just warning you now... wonder and amazement may be two emotional responses evoked when you happen upon ArchiPURLago's Monkeypod tree sweater. It's 55' of mathematical awesomeness! Yes, you read that correctly, fifty-five feet!

The Fibonacci sequenced stripes, in bold sunny colors, span the entire length of one of the tree's longest branches, practically reaching out to touch you or touch your heart is more like it. And the installation had one of the volunteers, Rita Scott, an experienced climber, actually tying off and climbing up into the canopy to seam the final piece together!

A Knitted QR Code?! Now that's High Tech.

Did you get a chance to check out the Tattoo Honolulu Exhibition at the Honolulu Academy of Art yet? If you did then you may have noticed one—soon to be two—of the Chinese horse statues greeting visitors is wearing a beautiful lei and a knitted saddle in honor of the horses that carry the Hawaiian pā`ū riders. But instead of carrying a lady, this horse is carrying information—and some high tech info at that!

It's a knitted QR code! Scan the code with your smart phone and it will send you here, to TheFuzz blog, where you'll find info for TheFuzz's Yarn Bombing Exhibition at the Honolulu Museum of Art's Spalding House. Pretty awesome yeah?! We thought so too.

The lei, saddle and letters were knit by our very own AchiPURLago and Aloha Knitter, Megan (Lilikoiknits on Ravelry), knit the QR code for us. They both did an amazing job!
